LAPD detains man in SpongeBob SquarePants outfit

Screen Shot 2011-09-15 At 10.09.24 Am From the Los Angeles Police Protective League email newsletter: "A man dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants was detained by police outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, officials said Wednesday. The man was questioned but not arrested Tuesday in what a Los Angeles Police Department official described as a 'brief incident with two females.' No other details were available. The incident was the latest run-in between characters who pose for pictures with tourists and then aggressively demand money, according to police."

Snowballs Made Easy with the Debt Free iPhone App

In my latest Credit.com column, I write about an iPhone app called Debt Free that helps people use the Snowball method to pay off credit card debt
201109131042Over the summer, I used credit cards to pay for things I’d ordinarily have used cash to purchase: vacation expenses, back-to-school supplies, school books, clothes for my kids, and business travel expenses. It added up fast. As a result, I am now carrying balances on three different credit cards. The total amount I owe is large enough that I can’t pay it off immediately, so I needed to come up with a plan to get out of debt.

I figured there’d be an app for that, so I looked around the iTunes app store and found something called Debt Free. It’s a well constructed app that helps you use the “Snowball method” to pay down your debt (including credit cards, car loans, lines of credit or any other kind of loan).

David Byrne’s giant globe inflated under the High Line

I'm awfully envious of the folks who get to see this in person!
201109121617And here comes Byrne himself, arriving as usual by bicycle, dressed all in blue, accented by his white hair, white wristwatch, and white leather sandals. He matches the oceans and ice caps, though he insists it’s a coincidence. “It’s big, isn’t it? It has some real mass to it,” he says, pressing on the South Atlantic with both hands and considerable force. The globe has just been inflated for the first time, and he’s happy with the result, which is different from the small models and renderings he’d sent off to the fabricators in Minneapolis. “It kind of looms over you. You don’t get that from the drawing.”

Vladimir Putin’s action hero persona in photos

Vladimir Putin's stagey action shots put the Russian leader in more macho costumes than a fleet of GI Joes. This Atlantic Big Feature photo-series catalogs the many moods of the ex-KGB spook. To quote Kottke:
Vladimir Putin rides a horse, drives a race car, tags a tiger, does judo, goes on archeological dives, looks at leopards, stands on a boat, arm wrestles, attempts to bend a frying pan, rides a snowmobile, flies a plane, hugs a dog, rides a motorcycle, looks at a bear, swims the butterfly, signs autographs, shoots a whale with a crossbow, plays the piano, feeds a moose, talks with a biker gang, steers a boat, walks through brush with a gun, sits in a tank, blacksmiths, plays hockey, hugs a horse, dives almost a mile in a submersible, and adjusts sunglasses.
