Laurie Anderson performing at Other Voices NYC benefit in October

Laurie Anderson's "O Superman (For Massenet)," recorded in 1981 for her epic United States performance piece and also released on the stunning Big Science LP.

Anderson will perform at the Other Voices NYC music and lit festival taking place October 27-28 and featuring a wonderful group of artists including Glen Hansard (The Swell Season), Bryce & Aaron Dessner (The National), Thomas Bartlett, Sam Amidon, Bell X1, Iarla O' Lionaird, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, and writers Joseph O'Connor and Colum McCann. The event is curated by Glen Hansard, Thomas Bartlett, and Philip King and benefits Dublin's Fighting Words creative writing center for young people.

Los Angeles may demand ID for buying spray paint, other art supplies

Dennis Zine of LA City Council has proposed checking IDs, and keeping tabs on the info, for purchases of various art supplies that are considered "graffiti paraphernalia." He just introduced the motion, but, if it were to pass, it would affect many creative people in LA.

Dutch authorities report that Diginotar hack issued hundreds of bogus certs for CIA, Google, Twitter, and other giants

The NYT has a summary of new information about the Diginotar hacking incident that has come to light over the past week:

Attackers who hacked into a Dutch Web security firm have issued hundreds of fraudulent security certificates for intelligence agency Web sites, including the C.I.A., as well as for Internet giants like Google, Microsoft and Twitter, the Dutch government said on Monday.

They're pointing fingers at the government of Iran. Bogus certificates were sent to sites operated by Yahoo, Facebook, Microsoft, Skype, AOL, the Tor Project, WordPress, and by intelligence agencies including Israel’s Mossad and Britain’s MI6.

There is much speculation that the attack was intended to compromise and surveil activists in Iran. In Wired News, Kim Zetter points out that DigiNotar has been criticized "for not disclosing the breach earlier to browser makers or the companies, like Google and Yahoo, who have had their digital certificates commandeered."

London Beer Flood and other food disasters

On October 17, 1814 at the Meux family brewery in Tottenham Court, London, a massive vat of beer cracked open, spilling 3,500 barrels of beer and killing eight people. Smithsonian's Food & Think blog sums up the "London Beer Flood" and several other "Deadly Disasters Caused By Food." Here's another:

Boston Molasses Disaster: In Boston’s North End, near the city’s financial district and working class Italian neighborhoods, there stood a molasses tank owned by the Purity Distilling Company. Built in 1915, the vat was capable of holding some 2.5 million gallons; however, by 1919, locals were complaining that it was leaking, and on the afternoon of January 15, it exploded. Flying metal knocked out the supports of nearby elevated train tracks and a 15-foot-high wave of molasses crashed through the streets at some 35 miles per hour, knocking down and enveloping people in its path. Parts of Boston were standing in two to three feet of molasses and the disaster left 21 dead and 150 injured.
